A global partner with a prestigious history

A thousand years ago, Japanese sword-smiths developed the high art of sword making to provide strong, sharp blades for the Samurai, the feared warrior caste. GLOBAL knives have been hand crafted in Japan using the same tradition for over 30 years and are developed using the best raw materials available. Like the Samurai swords before them, each knife is carefully weighted to ensure perfect balance in the hand.

GLOBAL knives are made from the finest stainless steel material. The blades utilise CROMOVA 18 stainless steel, ice tempered and hardened to hold a razor sharp edge as well as resisting rust, stains and corrosion. Other unique features of GLOBAL Knives are their smooth contours and seamless, all stainless steel construction which eliminates food and dirt traps offering the ultimate in safety and hygiene.

The two most innovative features of GLOBAL Knives are their edge and their balance. The majority of GLOBAL Knives are sharpened on both sides of the blade. Their edges are ground steeply to a point and to an acute angle. In contrast, Western or European knives use a bevelled edge – GLOBAL’s straight edge results in a dramatically sharper knife which stays sharper longer. The GLOBAL Knife edge is truly its signature. GLOBAL Knives also use a hollow handle which is then filled with just the right amount of sand to precisely create the correct knife balance.

Global kitchen knives were first designed in 1985 by the creative visionary, Komin Yamada. When Yamada was commissioned for this task, his mandate was to develop a range of knives that was truly new and revolutionary, using the best materials available and the latest manufacturing techniques. He was to fashion a series of kitchen knives which would appeal to the professional and amateur chef alike, be comfortable and easy to handle, and meet their most demanding requirement.

Design must be function

And vice versa. “Function and design must be natural and not stand in each others way”, says Yamada. “They’re unified, intertwined, two sides of the same coin, irrevocably inseparable.”

The GLOBAL CLASSIC Collection has remained unchanged as a true testament to its quality and unique construction. NI is the second generation of the iconic GLOBAL design. Each knife includes a distinctive oriental tip and fluted blade which gives the knife non-stick properties.

The SAI collection is the premium collection by GLOBAL Knives, also manufactured in Japan. 30 years after he designed the first iconic GLOBAL knife, designer Komin Yamada was given a mandate to design a new collection. His starting point was the world of the day, the contemporary zeitgeist – the knife design had to mirror the global context for what had become an international brand since its inception in 1985.

The key features of the Global Sai knives are :

  • New overall design
  • Individually hammered blade
  • Hand polished
  • Ergonomic, functional design
  • Three layers of steel
  • Mirror polished, razor sharp edge
  • Same steel use in the handle and the blade

The seven dots on the handles of SAI knives draw from the seven virtues of the Samurai. Those seven GLOBAL SAI ‘virtues’ represent how GLOBAL Knives’ heritage is entwined with the traditional Japanese sword makers and thousand-year-old traditions. Bushido – way of the Warrior. Komin Yamads’s flirt with the Samurai code of honour and moral principles, inspired by Confucianism and Buddhism;

  • Gi – Morality
  • Yuki – Courage
  • Jin – Benevolence
  • Rei – Respect
  • Makoto – Honesty
  • Meiyo – Honour
  • Chugi – Loyalty
